since it was hella cold out, i stayed holed up and cooked today. i made waffles for breakfast (at 3p =) and baked a loaf of bread this evening. it turned out much the way it does when made in a crockpot - very hearty. a little more yeast and another rise would have had it a little lighter. i also learned the diff between baking soda and baking powder. the latter being a leavening agent for when a recipe contains acidic substances - buttermilk, yogurt, sour cream, etc. you can even substitute baking soda + cream of tartar (an acid) for baking powder in a pinch - though it is only single action - when it hits liquid vs. double acting baking powder - liquid and heat. cool stuff.
